Just to let you know: we’ve de-activated the integrated statistics function of Zlio (currently in beta) due to several problems we’ve been having with results.

In the meantime we recommend that you use Google Analytics (for free). You can get the most accurate stats about your Zlioshop from there. We hope to integrate Google Analytics into Zlio in the near future.

Once you’ve registered, copy your tracking code and insert it in the statistic tags module that is already available for your Zlioshop.

Don’t worry though, we should have it all in ship shape soon enough.

At last, the time has come to announce our Local Contest winner!

Cue drumroll please…and the winner is:

http://londontown.zlio.net/

Ahh, of course. England’s favourite history-steeped capital, London.

London has survived through two world wars, a plague and a great fire so it’s only right that a true Londoner gives us the low down on what to do, where to go and what to buy.

Our Favourite Bits:

  • This store rounds up all the essential, must-see parts of London and puts them in one easy managable space. Experiencing this store is like taking a walk through London, minus the pidgeon excrement and stinky rush-hour tube journeys. Don’t worry, you can pick up souvenirs on your way!
  • We especially love the original gift idea: Tea for two at Harrod’s.  Quite, darling, quite!
  • Personalised introductions and added videos make for a great Zlioshop, they rock our world!
  • Things that Could be Improved Upon:

  • The background is rather ‘busy’, and we find it hard to read the text over it. We suggest using a plain header and adding the more colourful background to the side panels instead.
  • Well done, duttydiva, you did a great job. Congratulations on winning our Local Contest!

We’re constantly trying to expand Zlio in new ways, we know that the best way we can grow is to improve upon our services.

So, with that said, we’d like you to meet some of our new merchants…

    Office Shoes

There’s never a bad time to buy shoes. Shoes don’t judge you if you’ve put on a few. Shoes will love you even if you skipped a shower this morning. So why not share this love with others for a rather lovely 6% commission.

    The Cotswold Company

If you’re feeling the season, whether designing your own spring themed store or doing a bit of the old cleaning up yourself, then you’ll want to take a look at this new merchant. Everything you need to upgrade your home, and the 6% commission doesn’t hurt either.

    Nike Store

We’re proud to announce one of the leading names in Sports and leisure wear as a new Zlio merchant. A must have for any sports store. You don’t need to be training for a marathon to appreciate the 4% commission.

What’re you waiting for? Those empty shelves are begging to be stocked with new merch!

If you, like the rest of the British public, have been following the somewhat scandalous soap opera that is Amy Winehouse’s life, incidentally or not, you’ll know that everyone everywhere is urging her to clean up her act so she can start making that sweet, sweet music again!

Spring is the month when, generally, we all shed our Winter cocoons and begin leaping and whooping for joy, right?

Melt off that winter weight, flog the set of woollen reindeer jumpers your Aunty Jan made, and whip your garden into shape. Whether you’re still feeling the pudge from over Easter, or are deciding to fulfill your overdue New Year’s Resolutions…now is the time to detox.

Detox being the primary word, take note Miss Winehouse! Why not use a combination of Amy’s publicity and the lovely Spring weather to kickstart your fellow Zlionaughts into action?

There are a huge range of related products you could add to your store:

  • Checkout Holland & Barrett for detox related products (with a ginormous 9% comission)
  • Or, how about starting out gently with yoga equipment and skipping ropes from Sport-Thieme for a nice 4.5% commision
  • Of course it’s easier to detox if you have your own tutor, add Carol Vorderman’s Mini Detox Bible to your store for a tasty 3% comission from Waterstones.
  • We’re just planting a few seeds, it’s up to you to make them flourish, Zlionaughts!

    Are you green enough?

We catch up with successful Zlioshop owner, Linda Gerfen.

With Earth Day just gone, now, more than ever, is the time to be thinking of those little ways to cut down the size of your carbon footprint.
    Owner of
Earth Care, Linda Gerfen, shines (an energy saving ) light on the success of her ecologically friendly Zlioshop:

What inspired you into making a shop about green living? Is it something you feel particularly strongly about?
I believe that everyone can, and should, make at least some effort towards “green living”, even if for no other reason than to save money on utility bills!
In my own home we have swapped out many incandescent light bulbs for the new “spiral” type bulbs that last longer and use less electricity to operate. We also have wind-up flashlights for emergency use both in the house and in our vehicles. My favourite calculator happens to be solar powered.
Hopefully someday we can afford to add solar panels and wind power as our location is ideal for both, but that is still far in the future.
We recycle on a regular basis and also have acquired special shopping bags to help halt the use of “paper or plastic” although there still are very legitimate uses for those types of bags. It is just sad that so many plastic grocery bags have littered the countryside instead of being properly recycled or disposed of.

Do you have any special ways of promoting it?
The methods of promoting this shop, “Earth Care” (earthcare.zlio.net), that I have used so far are:
    1. Use of the keyword and description areas in the “Meta Tags” module.
    2. Linking to the shop from my other shops at Zlio via the “Shop Roll” module.
    3. A link from my website “Shoebox Recipes” (www.shoeboxrecipes.com) to my original shop “The Peachy Kitchen” (peachykitchen.zlio.com) which in turn links to my other Zlio shops.

I’ve yet to try using any of the directories but I do have plans to give that a whirl. It can’t hurt.

Do you have any other shops?
Oh, indeed, yes! I am currently building my 47th shop and at this time I hope that the limit will someday be expanded far beyond 50 shops, or a greater number of items allowed per shop. With all the items that are available to stock each shop it will be a long time before I run out of ideas and there are still areas that I haven’t ventured into.

What do you think of the Zlio service?
I think that Zlio is a wonderful opportunity for all who choose to join and I’ve been having a fantastic time using the service. I get a sense of accomplishment with each new shop that I’ve built or when I add a new category to an already existing shop. Of course I enjoy the added bonus of making some money in the process too!

Are there any new features you would like to see added on Zlio?
    1.
I’d love to see more templates become available. I’ve used quite a variety of them already and love the fact that they are so easy to work with.
    2. I think it would be a great service to have a forum available for use by storekeepers. It would allow the members to help other members with questions that come up beyond what is already in the help area, and it would allow everyone to meet eachother too.
    3. More than 50 shops, although I don’t think I personally could manage more than 100 total and still do each of them justice.
    4. The ability to have more items in each shop than is currently allowed. Perhaps double the quantity.
    5. Site statistics available right in the Zlio shop management panels. I’ve used others but find them cumbersome at best.

Do you have any advice for other Zlionauts?
Absolutely! Here’s a short list of what I do:
    1. Use the modules, especially the “Shop Roll” and “Meta Tags” modules on each and every shop.
    2. Check the “Report Panel” on a regular basis for each shop to catch items that have gone “out of stock” and delete them. Immediately replace those items with new items.
    3. Use the categories and sub-categories to their fullest extent whenever possible. Don’t be afraid to reorganise each shop when the need arises. Better navigation makes a better user experience for your shop’s visitors.

How do you foresee the future of your ZlioShop?
    In one word: Growth!
I see new items continually becoming available to be added to my existing shops, or to create a new shops with.

Long gone is the time of too many open browser windows clogging up your screen, not to mention your CPU! Put your RSS reflex in action and let the information stream its way to you - on a single glorious page.
RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines, and podcasts - and is the easiest way to keep up with what you want to know.

Why should I subscribe to an RSS feed? Because all the cool kids are doing it these days… No, really, by subscribing to an RSS feed (for free, of course) you can get the hottest information on your subject of choice delivered directly to your inbox. (For those of you using Microsoft Outlook and Apple Mail , you’ll find that both have tools to help you manage your RSS feeds.)

How do I find Zlio’s RSS feed? Look on the right, underneath the Archives, and you’ll see a section titled “Subscribe” with a happy little blue RSS button. (For the bloggers out there: RSS buttons come in lots of colours!) Click the RSS button to subscribe to our feed. Do it. Seriously. The peer pressure is overwhelming.

What about my Zlioshop? On the left, below the categories, your Zlioshop’s RSS can be found where it says “Follow what we’re up to.” For Zlionauts that would really like to step up their game, open a free account with FeedBurner to help spread the word and keep track of your subscribers.

OK, then what? To manage the vast quantities of RSS information that you will surely incur, try a free RSS Reader such as Google Reader  or Mercury Messenger.

Here’s an idea: Now wouldn’t it be smart to have your RSS feeds as the home-page on your internet browser?

You now have 8 more templates to choose from, including coffee, toys, gaming, and music. There’s bound to be something up your street, so go take a look!

We want to know: what do you want to know?

Zlio works on a community function, so it really matters what you, our Zlionauts, think! If you have any questions, now’s the time to voice them. Zlio Founder & CEO, Jeremie Berrebi, will answer you himself via video!

Yep, that’s right, email us your questions about Zlio to itwjb@zlio.com and the answers, in video, will be aired right here on the blog, on the 9th of May, 2008!

We’re anticipating a pretty full mailbox during that time, so be sure to make yours as precise and original as possible. Note, questions that are about the Zlio service are more likely to be answered. :-)

Did you know that you can make cash back on your own purchases through any of our merchants?
Once you’ve logged in to “Manage My Store” click on “My Revenues”, and select “Manage Merchants” from the drop-down menu. Click on any merchant’s logo and save money on all your own purchases automatically!

You can also buy from your own Zlioshop!
Note that this offer is only applicable through the “Pay Per Sell Offers” section.

Love where you’re from? Big up your hometown by theming your Zlioshop on your local area. This means showing off what goes on in your neck of the woods - general culture, wacky food, fun festivals and even bird-poo covered monuments - whatever you think best represents your local flavour!

Tell us a little about your area, and don’t forget to include some fun facts and figures, or even a few anecdotes! Here’s an interesting example: The “Rhubarb triangle” is an area of West Yorkshire farms bordered by Leeds, Wakefield and Bradford, where rhubarb is grown. I wonder if people mysteriously disappear there?

    Submission Criteria:

  • One Zlioshop per person
  • Older Zlioshops can be entered as long as they have been updated within 24 hours and contain NO EXPIRED PRODUCTS
  • Zlioshops entered into the contest must have a theme for one location, and one location only
  • Customisation and personalisation are greatly appreciated
  • Categories and Subcategories should reflect an easy navigation
  • Category and Subcategory titles should be well thought out
  • Aim for original products - surprise us!
  • And last but certainly not least, all Zlioshops should follow the standard Zlio guidelines.
  • Contest Schedule:
Submit your Zlioshops between April 28th - May 6th.
From April 30th- May 6th, vote for your favourites.
On May 7th, we, the Zlio Team, will select a winner from the community’s top 10 list.
The winner will be announced on the blog, on May 7th!

    Unleash the pride within!
